The Epidemic, Up Close and Personal: NC Has the Worst Opioid Problem in the Country
We reported a few weeks ago on Wilmington’s new status as the #1 opioid-abusing city in the United States. According to a recent study, 11.6% of Wilmington’s population has a problem with these drugs. Think about your ten best friends: if you lived in Wilmington, then statistically at least one of them would be in real trouble right now. Three other NC cities made the top-25 list, actually: Hickory at 5th, Jacksonville at 12th and Fayetteville at 18th. This isn’t a list we want to make at all, much less four times. So what’s going on?
Guess What? Millennials Save More Than You Do.
When you hear the term Millennial, what comes to mind? Lazy, entitled and childish, especially in the workplace. At least, that’s what the papers say. Well. Haters gonna hate — but they should probably stop. A new study from Bankrate.com proves that millennials may just be more adult than the rest of us, at least when it comes to financial savvy. They save like crazy, and they’re doing it well, even while financial security is slipping for the country as a whole.
Down Home Doctors: Poor Access to Healthcare in Rural NC
North Carolina is a green state, full of long back roads and old red barns and farmland as far as the eye can see. 80 of our 100 counties are rural, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. But here’s the thing. Our rural residents aren’t getting their fair share of the healthcare pie. Not by a long shot.
Unfair Care: Healthcare Prices Way Higher in Charlotte
One of the great frustrations of our healthcare system is that the price for identical services are different depending on where you live. Charlotte, for instance. The Charlotte Observer reports that healthcare in the Queen City is sometimes more than twice as high as in the rest of the country...or, say, in Raleigh. Where are we, y’all, New York?
Sky-High Prescriptions, and No End in Sight
You know what’s noble? Curing cancer. At a time when very few Americans agree about anything, we all seem to think that finding a cure for one of the world’s most deadly diseases (and North Carolina’s leading cause of death) is a really good idea. Even President Obama has thrown down the gauntlet about cancer research, without much backlash. So if everyone up to and including the President thinks this is so important, then why are cancer drug prices soaring? A new study out of UNC-Chapel Hill has found that the cost of cancer treatments at launch has increased by as much as 600% in the last 15 years. #smh, indeed.
